The Modern Man's Skincare Routine: Less Hype, More Results

4 min read

Men's skin ages. The sun in Australia is unforgiving. And the "wash with whatever's in the shower" approach has a use-by date.

Modern men's skincare doesn't have to be a 14-step routine. A simple, consistent approach with the right products can dramatically improve how your skin looks and ages — without ever feeling like a chore.

Here's the routine we recommend, the ingredients that matter, and what we stock in our skincare range.

Why Men's Skincare Is Different

Male skin has biological differences worth knowing:

  • Thicker — about 25% thicker than female skin, with denser collagen
  • Oilier — testosterone drives more sebum production
  • More prone to sun damage — particularly Australian men with year-round sun exposure
  • Daily shaving stress — micro-trauma, irritation and ingrown hairs
  • Often neglected — chronic under-investment compounds the visible signs of ageing

The Core Routine — 4 Steps, Twice a Day

Morning

  1. Cleanse — A gentle face wash to clear the overnight oil and prep the skin.
  2. Treat — A vitamin C serum (or antioxidant serum) to defend against UV and pollution.
  3. Moisturise — Light, non-greasy daily moisturiser.
  4. SPF — Non-negotiable in Australia. Broad spectrum, SPF 30 minimum, 50+ ideal.

Evening

  1. Cleanse — Wash off the day's sweat, sunscreen and pollution.
  2. Treat — A retinoid (alternating nights, building tolerance) or peptide serum.
  3. Moisturise — Slightly richer night cream to support overnight repair.
  4. (Optional) Eye cream — Targeted product for the thinner skin around the eyes.

Ingredients That Actually Work

SPF (Daily)

The single most impactful skincare product you'll ever use. Protects against UV-driven ageing, pigmentation and skin cancer. Apply daily — overcast, indoors near windows, all of it.

Retinoids (Vitamin A)

The gold standard for ageing. Increases cell turnover, supports collagen production, evens tone, fades pigmentation, smooths fine lines. Start low concentration, build slowly. Always evening only — UV-sensitive.

Vitamin C

An antioxidant that brightens skin tone, supports collagen synthesis and partially neutralises UV-driven free radicals. Use in the morning under SPF.

Niacinamide

Reduces redness, improves barrier function, helps regulate oil production. Plays nicely with almost everything.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hydration, plumps fine lines, supports the skin barrier. Apply to slightly damp skin before moisturiser for the best effect.

Peptides

Signal molecules that support collagen and elastin production. A useful complement to retinoids for ageing skin.

AHAs / BHAs

Chemical exfoliants for texture, blackheads and dullness. Use 1–3 times a week, not daily.

The Shaving Layer

If you shave regularly, the routine matters:

  • Shave after a warm shower — softer hair, less drag
  • Use a quality shaving cream or oil — not soap
  • Shave with the grain on the first pass
  • Replace blades regularly — dull blades cause irritation and ingrowns
  • Always follow with a soothing post-shave product

What Won't Help

  • Bar soap on your face — strips oils, disrupts barrier, accelerates ageing
  • Hot water washes — same problem, worse
  • "Anti-ageing" creams without retinoids, peptides, vitamin C or actives — they're moisturisers in fancy bottles
  • Skipping SPF on cloudy days — UV still gets through
  • Inconsistency — twice a week, then nothing for a month, then a binge — won't deliver results

Lifestyle Factors That Show Up On Your Face

  • Sleep — Repair happens overnight. Sleep deprivation shows up in skin first.
  • Hydration — Dehydrated skin looks dull and tired.
  • Alcohol — Inflames, dehydrates and ages the skin faster than almost anything else.
  • Diet — Sugar drives glycation, which damages collagen. Omega-3s and antioxidants support skin health.
  • Stress — Cortisol affects skin barrier function and oil production.
  • Smoking — Direct, dramatic ageing of the skin. There's no skincare that compensates.

The Bottom Line

You don't need a 14-step routine. You need 4 steps, done consistently, with products that contain actives that actually do something. Add SPF every day, train, sleep, eat well, and your skin will quietly thank you for the next two decades.
